The benefits of regular instrument maintenance

Stringed instruments are built primarily from wood — and wood moves with humidity and temperature. Regular maintenance isn't a luxury; it's the reason an instrument plays just as well at twenty years old as it did in its first month.

What you gain

  • Tuning stability: cleaning and lubricating the nut, tuners, and bridge keeps everything moving and seating the way it should.
  • Longer string and fret life: grime is an abrasive — it wears both quietly and continuously.
  • Crack prevention: humidity monitoring catches the conditions that lead to cracks, which cost many times more to repair than a routine check-up.
  • Noise-free electronics: cleaning pots and jack contacts before the scratching and crackling starts saves a much bigger headache later.
  • Value retention: a well-maintained instrument holds its price — something you'll appreciate if you ever want to sell or trade it.

How often

For an instrument played every day: a full maintenance once a year, plus a setup check with each change of season. For instruments kept in their case: at least an annual check-up — storage damage is the most insidious kind, because by the time you notice it, it's already significant.
